All historians have data. Whether it is scribbled in the margins of books, neatly organised in a research notebook or stored in a dozen Excel spreadsheets. In all these forms, we can record and retrieve our data, but in the digital age, there is so much more we could be doing. The workshop will be two-day event encouraging historians to engage with their historical data in new and innovative ways. Each day will be separated into four sessions, both pedagogical and practical, working with different types of historical data.

The plenary sessions will explore the nature of a potential data set and the different approaches to collecting, storing and using that data. The aim is to provide delegates with both an understanding of the importance of consistent data management practices in their day-to-day research as well as an overview of the tools appropriate to their type and stage of research.

The practical sessions, immediately following, will separate delegates into breakout groups, each of which will work with data provided by delegates, practicing the packaging and manipulation skills discussed in the previous session. The aim is for all delegates to leave the workshop with practical experience developing their own data sets, which can be continued afterwards.
